I recently joined the intrepid crew at Big R, the self proclaimed Farm Store Fly Shop. If you need a pair of Wranglers, some work gloves, a double bladed ax, some horse feed, some fencing, a trailer axle, some ammunition, some Simms or Patagonia, a new spey rod, some really good streamers and the fishing report from guys who fish hard locally and abroad, Big R is the place to go.
Imagine walking into the Great Falls, MT Big R Store: WELCOME TO BIG R STORES, A BIG RANCH STORE AND SO MUCH MORE! – and finding a serious Fly Shop housed in the middle of just about everything. Its a pretty sweet set up.
One of the reasons I fit in, is because half the crew is off to Honduras for two weeks and then Kris Keller is going to Thailand for 4 months to help train tyers for the Montana Fly Company. I need some week day employment until guiding starts again in the spring. Being surrounded by fly fishing stuff and fly anglers is the best way for me to function. I bring a bit of fly fishing knowledge to the store and hope to learn a bit more about Montana fly fishing while I’m there. Let me know if you need anything. I can probably find it.
Check out the BigR Flyshop blog for fly tying videos, destination reports, and what’s happening on the Missouri River and other local waters in NW Central Montana and other fishy stuff. Sam Wike and the crew keep the updates coming.

I love Big R. They used to have them here in Colorado. I’m going to have to check and see if they are still around.
Cofisher… those weren’t our Big R’s… they were owned by John Murdoch and are now called Murdoch’s Stores down there in Colorado. The only two farm stores in the United States that I know of that have a full service fly shop like ours is Great Falls, MT and Ponderay, ID… then we are opening Omak, WA with a fly shop in it next spring as well.
Thanks for the post and props Fred… appreciate it and glad you able to help us out this fall/winter/spring…
