Setting The Bar High From The Start

by Mysticfish on June 16, 2011

Kirk Adams kind of pissed off his buddy Mark Bonsack.  You see, Mark has been fishing with us for ten years and while he has landed at least one fish over 30″ in the past, Kirk kinda stole his thunder yesterday.  Mark is the yearly trip organizer and Kirk has been invited before, but had missed out last year. Their friend Steve was in the middle of a momment landing a 28″ rainbow that was his largest to date.  Mark gave up the sweet spot to come photograph Steve’s trophy. Steve had big fish honors for about 5 min until he relinquished the net.  While we were messing around with Steve’s fish, Kirk did not want to waste time.  He made the cast that mattered.
Kenai River Monster Fish - Rainbow Trout
That’s me holding the fish like I caught it, which I did in the net, but barely.  When I tried to fold the beast into my big rubber Frabil, he threw a tantrum and almost flopped out twice as I floundered to the bank and fell to my knees.  Once I had the wrist of his tail though, he knew it was a photo op and chilled out.  Thanks for your cameo on mysticwaters.com Troutzilla.  We hope to see you again.  Maybe in 2012, eh Mark?

I have had quite a few comments on facebook about this fish. It is actually a rainbow; not a King Salmon. It measured 35.4″ on the dunwright board without squeezing the tail. Yep, its a big rainbow.

Fred………. and Stacy too, I get it now!! Thanx for the patience and the lessons on the river 3 of the last 4 years. I didn’t believe I would fish the Kenai and have a trout dominate my memories. The fellowship of the day matched the magnificence of the river, fish and landscape. Fish of a life time……..priceless. Seeing Mark in elk camp this fall……even better! Thanx again Fred, Stacy, Mark and Steve for taking Mark away for 10 minutes!
