Sacred Country

by Mysticfish on May 19, 2011

I just ran across this video link on Moldy Chum.  It’s too good not to pass along, and by posting it, I can watch it again.

Many of you are familiar with the Pebble Mine Issue in Alaska, but B.C. is facing an insidious threat not as well known.  Pebble is all or nothing (hopefully nothing), but Shell and others are chipping away at the stone supporting B.C. (and S.E. Alaska) wild fish habitat.  I’ve been driving to and from Alaska for over 20 years and the development of oil and gas in B.C. is hugely apparent.  Some development is justified and inevitable, but they must stay away from the headwaters.  Here is a post I ran three years ago related to the Sacred Headwaters.  These things don’t go away.

Whatever happens upstream, moves downstream.  Here is a link to Double Haul Productions and more on the Sacred Headwaters Watershed.

I know many people are uncomfortable about supporting causes that are restrictive to development. I realize that I personally am dependent on petroleum products and other natural resources to support my daily life and my fishing job and habits. There is no doubt however, that we are faced with a shrinking world, a changing climate and as always, unstable economies and both world and domestic political struggles. I will always lean toward preservation first and careful development second when it comes to our rapidly diminishing wild lands and resources. Converting to alternative energy sources and actually utilizing wind and solar is also a no brainer, if we have any hope for a future with clean water, fish and wildlife.

Everyone has to believe in something; I believe I’ll go fly fishing!

I played the video honestly expecting not to like it. I didn’t like it…I loved it. Very well done without leaving me feeling like I just got stomped for not knowing enough about what goes on there. Good job!
